The same NIM that has trained Indian Army teams for Siachen and other high-altitude operations. That trained the team that put India's first woman on Everest.

Sainik School Ghorakhal - About 300 km from Uttarkashi. Nainital district. Uttarakhand domicile 67% seats. Mountain road - 7-8 hours.

Entry Class 6 or Class 9. Exam AISSEE. NTA. Every January.

RMS Schools

Five in India. All India merit.

RMS Dholpur - About 490 km from Uttarkashi.

RMS Ajmer - About 660 km.

Entry Class 6 or Class 9. Exam CET. December usually.

RIMC Dehradun

250 seats. All India. Class 8 only. Twice yearly. About 155 km from Uttarkashi via Rishikesh road. Accessible.

The Exam Patterns

AISSEE Class 6:

3 hours. No break given.

AISSEE Class 9:

Same 3 hours. More questions. Speed is everything.

RMS CET ↗ Class 6:

RMS CET Class 9:

Need 50% in each paper separately. Then interview. Then medical.

RIMC:

Interview marks added on top. Essays judged on quality.

NIM teaches high-altitude mountaineering in phases. Trekking first - building base fitness and acclimatisation. Basic mountaineering course - technical skills on lower terrain. Advanced course - higher altitude, more technical. Expedition - actual peak attempts. You do not skip phases. The body adapts to each altitude before going higher. The AISSEE preparation is phased the same way. Class 4 first term - base fitness of Math and English. Mid-Class 4 - build GK reading habit. Class 5 - mock test exposure. Class 5 second half - timed papers. Class 6 final months - peak attempt preparation. No phase skipped. Acclimatise at each level before going higher.

Age Rules

Strict. No exceptions.

Gangotri glacier is only accessible during summer - May to November. The temple opens in May. Closes in November. Outside that window - snow, inaccessible, dangerous. These exam windows are the same glacier access windows. Class 6 window is May of age 10 to November of age 12 (roughly). Be at the glacier - be at the exam window - in the right season with right preparation.

English - The challenge. Uttarkashi's schools are not English-medium. Grammar needs rebuilding. Comprehension needs months. RIMC essays need dedicated time. Start English first. Despite all the other advantages - English is the gap that must be addressed with maximum daily effort.

The NIM Standard

Nehru Institute of Mountaineering has one principle that is non-negotiable.

You do not go higher than your acclimatisation allows.

No matter how motivated. No matter how eager. No matter how strong you feel. The altitude does not care about motivation. The body needs time to adapt.

Go too fast - altitude sickness. Pulmonary edema. Cerebral edema. Death.

Prepare too fast - surface knowledge. No retention. Failed exam.

Both require respecting the process. Respecting the phases. Giving each stage the time it needs.

Two years of AISSEE preparation. Respect the phases. Do not skip. Do not rush to mock tests before the concepts are solid. Acclimatise at each level.

When Should You Start

For Class 6 entry - start in Class 4. Two full years. For Class 9 entry - start in Class 7. One year solid. For RIMC - start in Class 6. NIM physical advantage is already there. Build Math and English to match the altitude.
