The fort fell only when supplies ran out. And even then, Rajputs chose jauhar over surrender. Women walked into fire. Men wore saffron and rode out for certain death. Three times this happened. 1303. 1535. 1568.
A city that preferred death over dishonor. Why should it not produce officers who carry that honor forward?
Everyone knows this part. Maharana Pratap was born in Kumbhalgarh. Just 100 km from Chittorgarh. Year 1540. He grew up hearing stories of this fort. His ancestors defended these walls.
When Chittorgarh fell in 1568, Pratap was 28 years old. He made a vow. Never accept Mughal rule. Never sit on throne until Chittorgarh is recaptured. Never eat in metal plate. Never sleep on bed.
He kept that vow for 25 years until his death.
Haldighati happened in 1576. His horse Chetak became legend that day. Wounded badly, the horse still carried Pratap across a stream before dying. Rajasthan children still sing songs about Chetak.
