Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth and last Sikh Guru, died here.
October 7, 1708. Nanded.
He had been attacked by an assassin sent by the Mughal governor of Sirhind. The wound seemed to heal. Then reopened. On October 7, he passed.
He did not die in Punjab. Did not die at Anandpur Sahib or Damdama Sahib. He died in Maharashtra. In Nanded. On the banks of the Godavari river.
Before he died, he declared that there would be no more human Gurus. The Guru Granth Sahib - the holy scripture - would be the eternal Guru.
That declaration happened here. In this city.
The Hazur Sahib Gurdwara stands where he died. It is one of the five Takhts - the five seats of temporal authority in Sikhism. One of the holiest places in the world for Sikhs.
Pilgrim come from across India, Canada, UK, everywhere. Nanded has a significant Sikh community now because of this. Right in the middle of Maharashtra's Muslim and Hindu communities - a major Sikh pilgrimage centre.
