This city was the site of what has been called the greatest battle ever fought - and the turning point of the entire Second World War in Asia.

The Battle of Kohima, April-June 1944. The Japanese 31st Division - advancing to cut the British supply line and enter India - reached the ridge of Kohima and besieged the small British-Indian garrison there. The garrison held a position no bigger than a tennis court - literally, the Deputy Commissioner's tennis court on Garrison Hill - against overwhelming Japanese numbers.

For 13 days, 2,500 British-Indian soldiers held Kohima against 15,000 Japanese. Then reinforcements arrived. Then the counterattack began. By June 1944, the Japanese were in full retreat. The 15th Army was destroyed. The invasion of India was over.

The Battle of Kohima - fought alongside the Battle of Imphal - ended Japan's ambition to enter India. A memorial at Kohima carries the most famous war epitaph in history: "When you go home, tell them of us and say - For your tomorrow, we gave our today."
