Here is something most people do not know about Kargil.

This city gave its name to one of the most significant military conflicts in post-independence India - a conflict that tested the Indian Army's ability to fight at extreme altitude, under international scrutiny, and with one hand tied behind its back.

The Kargil War of 1999. Pakistani troops and militants had occupied Indian positions on the peaks and ridgelines above the Srinagar-Leh highway during the winter of 1998-99, when Indian forces had withdrawn from the unpatrolled snow-locked heights. The Indian Army had to retake those peaks - at altitudes of 4,000 to 5,700 metres - in frontal uphill assaults that military experts consider among the most difficult infantry operations in the world.

Point 4875. Tololing. Tiger Hill. Batra Top. Names that entered Indian military history because of the soldiers who climbed those peaks under fire.

Captain Vikram Batra - "Yeh Dil Maange More" - died taking Point 4875. Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav climbed 16,000 feet of near-vertical rock under fire at Tololing while already wounded and alone. He survived. Param Vir Chakra.

And Kargil district contains Drass - the second coldest inhabited place on Earth. Winter temperatures drop to minus 45 degrees Celsius. Drass is colder than most of Antarctica for large parts of the year.

Age Rules

Strict. No exceptions.

Operation Vijay - the Indian military operation to retake Kargil's peaks - had a specific timeline. The army had to retake all positions before July 26, 1999, the Kargil Vijay Diwas. The timeline was driven by monsoon weather making extended operations impossible. These exam windows have the same hard deadline. Age 10-12 for Class 6. July 26 is January for AISSEE. The peaks must be taken before that date.
