Here is something most people do not know about Imphal.

This city was the site of one of the most decisive battles of the Second World War in Asia - and the battle was fought in the streets and hills surrounding the city itself.

The Battle of Imphal, 1944. Japanese forces - attempting to cut the Allied supply line and capture India's Northeast - advanced into Manipur and besieged Imphal from March to July 1944. For four months, Imphal was surrounded. The city was supplied only by air. The fighting was in the hills immediately around the city - Nunshigum, Nungshigum, Kanglatongbi.

The Japanese 15th Army was destroyed in the battles of Imphal and Kohima. It was one of the greatest defeats ever suffered by the Japanese military. And in the decisive campaign, the British Indian Army - including Indian soldiers, including men from Manipur itself - turned the tide of the Burma campaign.

And the Indian National Army - Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's force that fought alongside the Japanese - also advanced into Manipur. The INA planted the Indian national flag on Manipur soil at Moirang in April 1944. The first Indian flag raised on Indian soil during the independence struggle - raised at Moirang, Manipur, by the INA.

And Imphal has Loktak Lake - India's largest freshwater lake in the Northeast, and one of the world's most unusual lakes. Floating phumdis - islands of decomposing vegetation - drift on the lake's surface. The Keibul Lamjao National Park, on the lake's floating phumdis, is the world's only floating national park. Home to the sangai - the brow-antlered deer - one of the most endangered mammals in the world.

And polo was invented here. Or more precisely, the modern game of polo as played globally traces its organised rules to Manipur. The Mayang Imphal polo ground is considered the birthplace of modern polo.
