The temple is of such significance that it is mentioned in the Narayaneeyam - a Sanskrit devotional composition written in the 16th century by the poet Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri, who composed it at this very temple while seeking cure from a disease, writing 100 dasakas (chapters) of intense devotional poetry.

The Guruvayur temple opens at specific hours - 3 AM for the early morning ritual, then at set intervals through the day. Outside those hours, the doors are closed even if thousands of pilgrims are waiting. The darshan happens in the opening window. These exam windows are the opening hours.
