Matangini - 73 years old - leading the procession carrying the Indian flag. She was shot three times. She continued forward. Shot again. She fell, but kept the flag raised with her last strength. She died saying "Vande Mataram."
Gandhi Buri - Old Lady Gandhi - as her followers called her. 73 years old. Still carrying the flag forward.
And the Tamluk National Government - the Tamralipta Jatiya Sarkar - established in 1942 in Midnapore as a parallel government to British rule, with its own police, courts, and administration. It functioned for 21 months in Midnapore. It was one of the most successful parallel governance experiments of the independence movement.
Midnapore was one of the most significant centres of organised anti-colonial resistance in Bengal.
