The Sugarcane Economy

West Champaran has sugarcane. Lots of sugarcane. The mills are here. The cultivation is here. The economy revolves around it. During crushing season, trucks loaded with sugarcane jam the roads. Mills run day and night. Employment peaks. Money flows.

But sugarcane economy has same problems everywhere. Mills delay payment to farmers. Sometimes by months. Sometimes by years. The farmer who delivered cane in November waits till March for payment. Sometimes till next November. The waiting is standard. The frustration is standard.
