"Sharma ji, I understand the school years now. But what I want to understand is the complete arc. From today — Class 6 at Sainik School — to actually becoming an NDA officer. What are all the steps? What happens when? What does my son need to do at each stage? Nobody gives me the full picture."
This is the most important question a Sainik School family can ask — and the least often answered in full. Most information focuses on the entrance exam. Almost nothing maps the complete journey from admission to commissioning.

Class 6-8: The Foundation Years
These years are less about NDA-specific preparation and more about building the foundation that NDA requires.
What the school is building:
Physical fitness baseline. Daily PT from Day 1. The body's relationship with physical activity is being established. By Class 8, a student who has done 3 years of daily PT has a significantly different fitness baseline than age-matched peers in regular schools.
Discipline and self-regulation. The routine is the teaching. Wake time, meal time, study time, lights out — the institutional clock becomes the student's internal clock.
Academic grounding. CBSE curriculum — Maths, Science, English, Social Studies — with the competitive academic culture of a residential school. Strong Class 6-8 academic performance builds confidence and the habit of sustained effort.
What parents can do during this period:
Support without hovering. Sunday calls should be calm and supportive, not interrogative about marks. Trust the institutional process.
Reinforce curiosity about the world — news, science, defence developments — that builds general awareness the student will need for NDA GAT later.
Class 9-10: Building NDA Relevance
By Class 9, the NDA timeline becomes visible. The exam happens in Class 12 or shortly after — 3-4 years away. This is when deliberate NDA orientation begins alongside regular academics.
CBSE Board preparation:
Class 10 boards matter for two reasons: immediate academic standing at school and as a foundation for Class 11-12 content that NDA written exam directly tests. Strong Class 10 Maths and Science performance sets up Class 11-12 capability.
Physical development:
Class 9-10 are critical physical development years. PT demands increase. Inter-house sports competitions become more serious. Students who are physically weaker begin feeling the gap more acutely.
For students who find PT demanding in Class 9-10 — additional personal physical effort during free periods and vacations matters. Running specifically — build from whatever current capacity to progressively better times.
NDA awareness development:
Begin reading about NDA specifically in Class 9. What is the structure of NDA Pune? What training happens there? What does a commissioned officer's career look like? This awareness builds genuine aspiration that sustains the student through the harder academic demands of Class 11-12.
Class 11-12: The NDA Preparation Window
This is where the Sainik School path and the NDA preparation path directly converge. Class 11-12 content IS the NDA written exam content. Board preparation and NDA preparation are the same activity in this period.
NDA Written Exam Structure:
Mathematics Paper (300 marks): Class 11-12 Maths. Algebra, trigonometry, analytical geometry, differential calculus, integral calculus, vector algebra, statistics and probability. This is the same content as JEE Maths though at different depth.
General Ability Test (GAT) Paper (600 marks): English (200 marks) — grammar, vocabulary, comprehension at Class 11-12 level. General Knowledge (400 marks) — Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Current Affairs, Defence knowledge.
Total: 900 marks. 2.5 hours per paper.
The double-track preparation:
The Sainik School Class 11-12 curriculum directly covers NDA Maths content. Board preparation builds the foundation. But NDA-specific preparation adds:
Speed practice for Maths — NDA Maths paper requires solving complex problems quickly. Board exams allow more time per question.
GAT-specific current affairs and defence awareness — beyond what standard board GK covers.
Previous year NDA papers — essential for understanding question types and difficulty calibration specific to NDA pattern.
When to attempt:
NDA exam is conducted twice yearly — April/May (NDA I) and September/October (NDA II).
A Class 12 student can appear for NDA II in September-October of their Class 12 year — results come out while they're completing boards. If they qualify written and clear SSB before boards results, they may join NDA before/alongside board completion.
Alternatively, appear for NDA I in April after completing Class 12 boards.
Most Sainik School students target NDA II in Class 12 — giving themselves the flexibility to attempt without delaying academic completion.

The SSB — Services Selection Board
Clearing NDA written exam is the filter. SSB is the actual selection.
SSB structure (5 days):
Day 1: Screening — Officer Intelligence Rating test, Picture Perception and Discussion Test. Roughly 50-60% of candidates are screened out here. Only those who clear Day 1 screening proceed.
Days 2-4: Psychological tests (Thematic Apperception Test, Word Association Test, Situation Reaction Test, Self Description Test), group tasks (group discussion, group planning exercise, progressive group task, half group task, command task, lecturette, final group task), officer selection board interview.
Day 5: Conference — all assessors discuss each candidate. Final recommendation or rejection.
Candidates are either "Recommended" (proceed to medical) or "Not Recommended." Recommendation rate: approximately 20-25% of those who clear Day 1 screening.
What SSB actually assesses:
Officer-Like Qualities (OLQs): 15 specific qualities including effective intelligence, power of expression, social adaptability, courage, stamina, self-confidence, speed of decision, initiative, group influencing ability, and others.
SSB doesn't test memorised answers. It observes behaviour across 5 days of diverse situations. The assessors are looking for authentic OLQs, not performed ones.
The Sainik School advantage at SSB:
This is where the 7-year advantage is most pronounced and most direct.
Group discussion: 7 years of inter-house debates, group activities, house meetings. The Sainik School student is genuinely more comfortable speaking in a group setting.
Command task: the task requires organising a group to complete a physical problem. 7 years of house PT and group activities have given genuine experience leading peers in physical-challenge contexts.
Lecturette: speaking confidently for 3 minutes on a chosen topic. Years of school assemblies, presentations, and public events.
Physical composure: SSB outdoor tasks are physically demanding. The Sainik School student is genuinely more physically capable than average.
Interview: Years of formal interactions with authority (school officers, visiting officials) build the composure in formal individual interaction that SSB interview requires.

Medical Examination
Candidates recommended at SSB proceed to medical examination at a designated Military Hospital or Services Selection Centre medical facility.
Medical standards are strict. Eyesight (corrected vision acceptable within limits, uncorrected vision limits apply to Air Force and some Naval branches), flat feet, dental, hearing, orthopaedic — all assessed to military standards.
For students with known borderline conditions — addressing these during Sainik School years (vision, dental) is far better than discovering them at the NDA medical stage.
If declared Temporarily Unfit: Some conditions may be cleared after treatment. Timeline: sometimes this delays NDA entry by one term.
If declared Permanently Unfit: Affects NDA entry but not necessarily CDS or other commissioned entry routes depending on the specific condition and the service branch.
Training at NDA Pune
Candidates who clear medical proceed to NDA, Khadakwasla, Pune for 3-year training.
Three years: academic, physical, military, and character training at one of India's most prestigious institutions. Cadets from all three services train together for the first 3 years before separating to their respective service academies.
The Sainik School graduate who joins NDA has been in residential military-style environment for 7 years already. The NDA transition — while demanding for any cadet — is less jarring for those with this background.
Commissioning
After NDA training and subsequent service academy training (Indian Military Academy for Army, Naval Academy for Navy, Air Force Academy for Air Force): commissioning as officer.
Army: Lieutenant. Navy: Sub-Lieutenant. Air Force: Flying Officer.
The journey from Class 6 AISSEE to this commission: approximately 10-11 years.
