RIMC December 2026 Exam: Registration & Study Plan

The RIMC December 2026 exam is for the July 2027 term, and the seats per state can be counted on one hand. Here's a plain-English guide to registration, who can apply, what's on the paper, and how to plan the months ahead without the panic.

RIMC December 2026 Exam: A Parent's Guide to Registration and Study

Most parents I talk to say the same thing. They know their child wants RIMC. They just don't know where to start. And the official notice doesn't help — it reads like a legal document.

So let me explain it the way I'd explain it to a friend over tea.

The RIMC December 2026 exam is for the July 2027 term. Clear it, and your child walks into Class 8 at the Rashtriya Indian Military College ↗ in Dehradun. There are barely a handful of seats per state, which is exactly why the families who plan early tend to do better.

So when is the exam?

Twice a year — once in June, once in December. The December paper almost always sits on the first Sunday of the month. Last year that was 7 December. Going by that pattern, December 2026 should fall in the first week. But the college can move dates, so keep an eye on rimc.gov.in rather than trusting any one date you read online, this blog included.

Can your child even apply?

Three things decide it. The admission is only for Class 8, so your child should be in Class 7 right now or have already cleared it. The age has to sit between 11½ and 13 years as on 1 July 2027. And yes, girls can apply too these days, which a lot of parents still don't realise.

The registration bit everyone gets wrong

Here's where people trip up. You don't send anything to RIMC Dehradun. The form goes to your State Government. The college only sells you the form.

You buy it online at rimc.gov.in, or you post a Demand Draft to the college. Either way they courier back the prospectus with a previous year's question paper — hold on to that one, it's genuinely useful for practice.

The general-category fee is around ₹600, a little lower for SC/ST. The December window usually shuts somewhere near mid-October, so don't leave it for the festival weeks when everything slows down.

What's actually on the paper?

Three subjects, 400 marks in total. Maths carries the most at 200, then English at 125, and General Knowledge at 75. The tricky part is the cut-off. Your child has to clear 50% in each subject separately. A brilliant Maths score won't rescue a weak English paper.

The level is roughly CBSE ↗ Class 6 and 7. No negative marking, thankfully. Clear the written round and there's a 50-mark interview after that, with the final list adding both scores together.

A study plan that fits the months you've got left

Don't try to cram it all at once. Spread it out instead.

For the first few months, just move through the full syllabus calmly, one time over. Put the extra hours into whichever subject your child dreads, which is usually Maths. Reading the newspaper aloud sounds old-fashioned, but it quietly builds both English and GK without feeling like study.

Around the middle stretch, switch to full mock tests under a timer. The clock is half the battle at this age. Go over every wrong answer properly instead of just glancing at the total.

The last month is only for revision. No new chapters. Old papers, quick notes, and proper sleep. A tired child forgets the easy things in the exam hall.

Where coaching fits in

Plenty of kids prepare on their own and turn out fine. What good coaching really buys you is time and direction — a plan, regular tests, someone to clear doubts the same day, and a bit of interview practice, which honestly rattles most eleven-year-olds.

That's the part we work on at Sainik Study. Simple teaching, steady practice, and no drama.

Don't put it off

The December 2026 exam quietly favours the families who start now. Note the form deadline somewhere you'll actually see it. Sketch out a rough plan this week. And keep your child relaxed about the whole thing — that matters more than most people think.
