Career Paths After Sainik School: Joining the Indian Armed Forces
Suresh ji called me in March. His son had just cleared AISSEE and got allotted to Sainik School Rewari.
"Sharma ji, I'm happy. But my wife keeps asking — after 7 years, what exactly happens? How does a Sainik School student actually join the Army? What are the steps? Is NDA the only way?"
This is a question worth answering in detail. Most families focus entirely on clearing AISSEE. Very few understand the actual pathway from Sainik School to commissioned officer in the Indian Armed Forces. And there are more pathways than most people realise.
The Primary Route: NDA (National Defence Academy)
This is the route Sainik Schools were designed to feed. NDA is the most prestigious and direct pathway to a commissioned officer career in Army, Navy, or Air Force.
When: NDA exam is conducted by UPSC twice yearly — April and September. Students appear in Class 12 or immediately after.
Eligibility: Unmarried male Indian citizens aged 16.5 to 19.5 years. For Naval and Air Force wings — additional physical standards apply.
What the exam tests: Written exam (Maths and General Ability Test at Class 11-12 level) followed by SSB (Services Selection Board) interview. SSB is a 5-day assessment covering intelligence, personality, officer-like qualities, leadership, and communication.
Where Sainik School makes the difference: Seven years of daily PT builds the physical standard NDA expects. Seven years of cadet hierarchy, inter-house competition, and public performance builds SSB-relevant personality traits. Seven years of awareness orientation — current events, defence GK, national issues — prepares for both written exam and SSB discussion rounds.
A Sainik School student walking into SSB has spent years unconsciously building what the assessment looks for. This doesn't guarantee selection. But it shifts the probability meaningfully.
After NDA: Three years at NDA in Pune. Then commissioning as Lieutenant in Army, Sub-Lieutenant in Navy, or Flying Officer in Air Force.
Girls After Sainik School — NDA Now Open
Since 2021, NDA is open to women. Girls who join Sainik Schools under the new policy can pursue the same NDA pathway.
The Supreme Court order in 2021 opened NDA to all genders. Girls from Sainik Schools now have the same direct pathway as boys — NDA written exam, SSB, and commissioning.
For the first batch of Sainik School girls completing Class 12 in coming years — this represents a genuine, direct defence officer pathway that didn't exist even a few years ago.
For Those Who Don't Clear NDA — Multiple Alternative Pathways
NDA qualification requires clearing a national-level UPSC exam and a demanding SSB. Not every Sainik School graduate achieves this. But the alternative pathways are genuinely strong.
CDS (Combined Defence Services):
After graduation (any bachelor's degree), CDS is conducted by UPSC for Army, Navy, and Air Force officer entry. Army, Naval Academy, and Air Force Academy entries available.
For Sainik School graduates who don't clear NDA — graduate, prepare for CDS, and attempt the same SSB process. The Sainik School background remains directly relevant at SSB years later. Physical fitness standards and the personality characteristics developed during school years don't disappear.
Technical Graduate Course (TGC) and University Entry Scheme (UES):
Army entry for engineering graduates. For Sainik School students who pursue engineering at IIT or any technical institution — TGC and UES provide direct short-listing for officer entry based on academic performance with SSB assessment.
AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test):
Air Force officer entry after graduation. Flying branch (pilot), ground duty (administration, logistics, education, meteorology, accounts), and technical branch. Open after graduation.
Short Service Commission (SSC):
Army entry route open to male and female graduates in various branches. SSC officers serve 10-14 years with option for permanent commission.
The SSB Factor — Why It Matters More Than Most Families Realise
All Armed Forces officer entry routes — NDA, CDS, TGC, UES, AFCAT — converge on one assessment: SSB (Services Selection Board).

JCO/NCO route: After Class 12, enlistment in Army as soldier, followed by promotion to Junior Commissioned Officer or Non-Commissioned Officer ranks. This is a different pathway from commissioned officer but a complete and respected career in the Army.
CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP: Central armed police forces. Officer entry through UPSC CAPF exam after graduation. Sub-Inspector entry through separate recruitment.
Coast Guard: Officers through CGEPT after graduation. Enrolled entry after Class 12.
MNS (Military Nursing Service): For girl students from Sainik Schools who pursue nursing — MNS provides a direct defence career pathway.
What Parents Should Understand About This Timeline
The journey from AISSEE to wearing a commission badge takes 10-15 years from joining Sainik School.
Class 6 joining → 7 years at Sainik School → Class 12 → NDA (if cleared) → 3 years at NDA → Commissioning as officer at age 21.
Or: Class 6 joining → 7 years at Sainik School → Class 12 → Engineering/graduation → CDS/TGC → Commissioning at age 24-26.
This is a long arc. Parents who understand this invest differently in the preparation. The AISSEE exam is not the destination — it's the first significant step in a decade-long journey.
